Weak reception : Boss 634CA In-Dash CD Receiver with Front Panel AUX Input
Purchased this unit recently to replace an older, gently failing aftermarket stereo that lacked some of the features that are now considered standard. Here are my comments:
- Features include: detachable face, AUX-in, CD-R capable, AM/FM, yadda, yadda, yadda.
- Audio is fine. Volume goes from 0-100. There is a LOUD function along with several pre-built EQs or customized Bass/Treble controls for sound customization. I found the EQs to be a bit too rough for my likings, but LOUD + the Bass/Treble gives me a sound comparable to my previous setup, which was more than good enough for me. Keep in mind, I'm running the audio through factory speakers.
- CDs play fine, an improvement on the somewhat skippy play of my previous unit. AUX-in is the feature that sold me on it, and works just as expected. On the radio side there's an auto-scan function that will populate the 6 clearest signals into the station presets. I don't really see a use for that for me, but if that floats your boat...
- The interface is a bit clunky, but workable. I do like the dedicated CD Pause and Stereo Mute buttons, however they're generally a bit small and tough to distinguish from one another at this point. Nothing familiarity shouldn't resolve though. The biggest issue to me is that to display the clock, you have to hit the far right button and it will display for 2 seconds before returning to the default Stereo/CD/AUX display. That's just a minor nuisance though.
- I like the signal reception icon displayed in Radio mode, but the reception is a bit dodgy for some reason. My main station (on the low end of the dial, if that makes a difference) has pretty good coverage throughout the area but is hit or miss in areas where I previously never had an issue. (NOTE: this could potentially be related to the fraying antenna cable I accidentally dismantled and hence re-assembled when removing it from the old unit, but that doesn't quite explain to me how this affects one station only when that station should be well-powered enough in the first place.) I haven't found any other reported instances of this issue and if I'm truly the only one experiencing this, feel free to disregard.
- This was my first attempt at a stereo installation and I thought the manual could have been a bit clearer on some parts of the install. However, I was able to rely on the many other resources about installations available online to address my questions. Probably a non-issue for most buyers as the course of action was painfully obvious in retrospect.
All in all I thought this was well worth the $50 I paid for it. Is it worth the $20+ savings on a Pioneer, Alpine, or Sony? To me yes, to others...
